This bird originally came from Europe. It was brought to New York in the 1850's in the hope that they would eat canker worms that were hurting trees in the New York City parks. The house sparrow not only took care of the worms, but easily adapted to many new habitats, especially those near people, and can now be found throughout the continental US.  House sparrows have a habit of showing up at feeders in hordes, which is one reason some people consider them a nuisance bird. But remember this... If you love your roses, and despise the Japanese beetles that eat away their petals, you may want to keep the House Sparrows around. They seek out adult Japanese beetles to dine on.

When not feeding on the beetles, the House Sparrow, like many sparrows, loves bread and bread products in feeders. Here's an easy recipe you can bake. The house sparrow will love it!
