Hummingbird Bath

Few can resist the sight of a hummingbird flying from flower to flower, or feeder to feeder, but all that activity can make a little bird tired and hot.  A carrot or apple birdbath may be just the thing for a little refreshment and recharging, and hopefully slow your hummingbirds down long enough for some great close-up viewing.

It's easy to build, just follow the steps below.

Step 1 - Cut an inch off the top of a large carrot or apple.

Step 2 - Starting in the center, use the tip of a vegetable peeler or a small spoon and hollow out an inside well approximately 2 inches deep and 1 inch wide. Cutting through the apple core may be a bit more work. Try using a small blade knife - just be careful! (Note: this small bath is plenty big enough for birds accustomed to bathing in tiny puddles on the ground or in fallen leaves.)

Step 3 - Push the sharp end of a 4 to 6 inch chop stick, bamboo skewer, fondu stick, or similar stick through the walls of the carved well about 1 to 1 1/2 inch from the top of the carrot or apple. The hummingbird will use the stick as a perch, both inside the bath and outside of the bath.

Step 4 - Tie a 6 inch piece of RED string or yarn (hummingbirds are attracted to red) around each end of the stick.

Step 5 - Tie the loose ends of the string together over a low branch or clothesline.

Keep the well filled with water and be sure to check it often for your backyard hummingbirds!  Depending on the location and conditions, the bath should last around 2-3 weeks.

Enjoy the refreshed Hummingbird!
